She went on to become one of the most powerful voices in the civil rights movement, co-founding the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, testifying before the Credentials Committee at the 1964 Democratic National Convention in a speech that was broadcast live on national television, and working tirelessly for voting rights, economic justice, and human dignity until her death in 1977.
