Fonteny is revered terroir, Grand Cru in all but name. Certified organic from Mark's plot of 80 year old vines next to Grand Cru Ruchottes-Chambertin.
96 Points, James Suckling – “Blue and dark fruit, floral aromas and earthy, mineral undertones. The palate is seamlessly integrated with a round, textural mouthfeel, driven acidity and a complete finish. From 80-year-old vines owned and farmed by Mark himself, bordering the grand cru vineyard Ruchottes. 75% whole-cluster. Excellent now or can be aged for years to come.”
92-95 Points, Jasper Morris – “Deeper purple, slightly more sombre dark berry fruit, with the pepperiness behind, but this time the flavours push on through. Not so immediate as the Morey Chaffots but with an impressive reserve. This becomes fresher and juicier on the palate, benefitting rather than suffering from the extra yield. Good acidity, while the fruit holds it together, delivering Mark’s best Fonteny to date”. Drink from 2031-2038.
17.5, Jancis Robinson – “Own vines. A plot next to Ruchottes with neighbours Dugat-Py and Bruno Clair. Certified organic. Cask sample. Rich and really gorgeous but awfully expensive. Long and reverberant.”
