Born in 1800, Barry, the St. Bernard, was the epitome of bravery. During his time as a mountain rescue dog in Switzerland and Italy he saved over 40 people. His most famous rescue involved him saving a young boy who he found in a cavern of ice following an avalanche. Barry warmed the child up by licking him, moved him onto his back and carried him to the hospice, where he recovered and was returned to his parents.
