Some views only reveal themselves from the window seat. From my workshop window in Bozeman, the Absaroka Range rises along the eastern horizon — a long, weathered spine of rock that has defined this landscape for millions of years. This scarf began just after lift off, when I looked down from an airplane window and saw the range the way an eagle does: ridge after ridge of ancient stone in every shade of caramel, ash, and amber, threaded with snow and shadow. The Absarokas follow the Yellowstone River between Gardiner and Livingston, — one of the least-touched mountain ranges in the American West. I carried that view home and printed it on silk.
