This portrait depicts Chief Massasoit, a Native American leader of the Wampanoag Confederacy in the early 1600s, who later adopted the name Wassamagoin, meaning “Yellow Feather.” He is remembered for forging one of the earliest and most important alliances between Native Americans and European settlers. As no images of Massasoit exist, this work serves as a contemporary interpretation, honoring his legacy through an imaginative and innovative use of color.
