The KING Deluxe #400 is a coarse whetstone designed for edge repair, bevel correction, and restoring very dull knives before progressing to finer stones.
One of the biggest advantages of this stone is its large “Sancho-gake” size. The generous sharpening surface provides excellent stability and control, making it comfortable to use even during longer sharpening sessions.
Compared with many coarse stones, the KING Deluxe #400 wears relatively slowly, helping it stay flatter for longer. A flatter stone makes it easier to maintain a consistent sharpening angle and achieve more predictable results.
While I always recommend regular flattening regardless of the stone you use, the KING Deluxe #400 is a stone that is relatively easy to keep flat and maintain.
This grit level sits perfectly between heavy repair stones and standard sharpening stones. It removes steel efficiently while producing a more controlled scratch pattern than extremely coarse stones.
I personally use this stone when removing deep scratches left by #100–#200 grit stones and preparing the blade for further refinement. It has become a reliable part of my sharpening process when working on customers’ knives at Japanese Knife Garage.
Suitable for both Japanese and Western knives.
